A change to the European data law will require sites to asses how personal information is being used, giving Europeans more control over their data.
The changes will come into force in May 2018, and will be under Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
GSPR’s idea is to protect its citizens better, by issuing a series of principles to those who handle data across 28 member states.
Ireland’s Data Protection Commissioner Helen Dixon said: “One of the things we have high hopes for significant change under the GDPR is how transparency is really delivered to users, particularly by these internet companies.”
“We know from our engagement with them that a lot of them are looking very proactively at how they are going to do the transparency under the GDPR,” she added.
According to Wired, Google is working on “operational changes” to comply with the upcoming regulation.
