Debit card glitch charges UK consumers twice

Thousands of UK consumers have been charged twice for debit card payments.

Money has been coming out of bank accounts twice. Despite this, transactions only showed up once on many receipts from pubs, shops and restaurants.

The error came to light over an issue with a card terminal by Cardnet – a joint venture with First Data and Lloyds Bank.

Lloyds Banking Group revealed that all customers affected have been refunded and that only 5% of Cardnet machine transactions were affected.

Nevertheless, customers are still being warned of the issue and are advised to thoroughly check their statements.

“A small number of transactions processed last Thursday by Cardnet were duplicated,” said a Lloyds Banking Group spokesperson in a statement.

“All customers have now been automatically refunded, however, customers can check their statements and get in touch with their banks if required.”

Most affected transactions involved Visa debit cards.
