Apple pushes forward self-driving car tests

The American multinational testing company is concerned that media coverage can cause public misunderstanding and confusion, because of permit holders reports being inconsistent.

It has told the DMV that it would like disengagement reports to cover when a driver takes control of a vehicle, to create a set of accurate data, and to inform public on the safety of a self-driving vehicle.

A letter written by Apple has been shared, saying how they are excited about the potential of automated systems in many areas, including transportation, and that the company is investing heavily in the study of machine learning and automation, clearly and accurately.

Apple will now need to publicly share details on testing processes, because of participating in the DMV’s Autonomous Vehicle Testing Programme, which will make it difficult to keep development on the software secret.

Since being granted a permit two weeks ago, Apple has started testing three of its autonomous Lexus SUV vehicles on open roads, which are equipped with sensors and cameras.
