Delta Airlines will be testing its new self-service bag drop incentive at the US Minneapolis-St, Paul International Airport this summer.

The US$600,000 initiative will be tested with facial recognition software that scans the flyers face with a camera, confirming passport photo identity.

The aim is to allow customers to quickly, securely and easily check their own bags before they fly, in an effort to speed up bag drops, as they go past check-in agents.

“We expect this investment and new process to save customers time,” said Gareth Joyce, Delta’s Senior Vice President.

“Since customers can operate the biometric-based bag drop machine independently, we see a future where Delta agents will be freed up to seek out travellers and deliver more proactive and thoughtful customer service.”

According to Delta the system complies with privacy laws and scanned images will not be stored.
